In your first entry, answer these questions: What forms of new media do you use
daily? How has new social media influenced your perspective of events? Are these
positive or negative influences?
The main form of new media I use at least a few times a day is facebook. Though I don't normally post, I do enjoy looking around at the various pages and happenings on the site. Since I have so many family and friends who live out of the area and in various states, I have an up to date feed of what has been going on in their lives. I also use Linkedin at various times. Outlook and Yahoo Mail are also daily use items for me as well.
I don't believe that new social media has really influenced my perspective on events. I believe it does influence my husband to some degree, (laughing). I tend to just do some research and try to formulate my own opinion on things. I believe that if I read everything that is going on in the world on a daily basis based off media postings, I would never eat, drink, sleep, or better read breathe again. I try to live my life based on the largest impacts and greatest amount of effect. Such as, the HIV epidemic, or when H1N1 was happening and even than I was not in that much of a panic. You just take precautions in your life, even if social media did not exist.
I believe there are plenty of positive influences, it does keep many people informed has to what is happening in the world. Like the reading stated, now people can listen to podcasts while brushing their teeth and stay in line with the events of the world. I remember my grandfather reading the paper every morning. That was his dose of staying in touch of what is happening in the world. The downside is that we can get to much stimulation, to much feedback, to much knowledge as to what is happening in the world and it can create a large amount of paranoia. I don't believe I would want to know what is going on in all parts of the world at all times.
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI am the same as you with Facebook, I like to read what people are doing but I will not post much on it. I really do not like acquaintances knowing what I am doing on a daily basis.
I also agree with you that social media and new media can be overstimulating. There is so much information everywhere you look and it can be a bit much at times. I often 'detox' from social media and I will not get online or read anything for a day or two, and I will pick up a book to read. It keeps me from going crazy.
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI do the exact same thing when it comes to Facebook! I read what everyone else is doing, and I rarely post anything. I'm not sure I really understand why people feel the need to post almost every move they make on social media sites. You can waste hours fooling around on Facebook. I know this, because I've done it! My normal routine is to watch the news first thing in the morning before I go to work. Sometimes I have to take a break from that. I've found that if there is too much violence (stimulation), my outlook on the day can be drastically tainted.
I am the same as you and Andrea and Laura. I use Facebook to follow my family and friends but I do not post anything and rarely respond to anyone else. I mainly keep up with family and friends, I do not understand why people have to post some wasteful information which seems to be repeated frequently. Social media can be addictive for some people and it seems that it is all that they do. I have even seen co-workers who are constantly texting or posting on Facebook. How can you care for patients and be distracted with your phone?
ReplyDeleteYou do a great job of discussing both the positives and negatives of social media. When you mention that you are not influenced by what you read on social media but that your husband is, you are touching upon the third-person effect theory. You might enjoy googling that to learn more.
ReplyDeleteI really like your blog. I reminds me of the city of Savannah, Georgia. Unfortunately, the Civil War destroyed most of Atlanta but much of Savannah is still as it was over a hundred years ago. When I visit Savannah, it make me appreciate certain things about the old south. Now because of slavery, I definitely do not want to go back to those times but the architecture of the buildings and the old trees make the city beautiful. When you get information or see things that inspires you, it does not matter how old it is. I am so glad that you shared this information.
